Was there ever a time when both people from the North and the South owned slaves?
Yes, there was a time when both Northerners and Southerners owned slaves.
Tell me about the economy of the North.
The North had big cities with big factories.  They did have some small farms, but they couldn’t grow enough food for the growing population.
Tell me about the economy of the South.
The South had very few large cities and factories.  They relied mostly on agriculture.  The main crops were sugar, tobacco and cotton.  The population was slow-growing.
Why did some Minnesotans want to maintain good relationships with the Southerners?
They wanted to keep good relationships because:
Many Southerners came to Minnesota for vacations.
Minnesotans wanted to keep tourists coming to Minnesota.
If they offended the Southerners, they wouldn’t get the income from the tourists and visitors.
How did MOST Northerners feel about slavery?
Northern feelings about slavery...
It was unprofitable and morally wrong
However, many felt Southerners should be able to keep their slaves.
Runaway slaves should be returned to their owners.
Most Northerners felt slavery should not expand into new western states.
Many felt Eliza Winston should remain the property of the Christmas family.
At what time during the war did President Lincoln issue the Emancipation Proclamation?
It was issued near the end of the war.
What was the Emancipation Proclamation?
The Emancipation Proclamation made it clear that if the North won the war, the slaves would be freed.  This was a new goal and cause for the North, in addition to the original goal of preserving the Union.
Can you list several of the experiences that Charlie Goddard had during the war?
Charlie Goddard
Did not fight at Bull Run because he was ill.
Survived Antietam, the bloodiest battle of the war, but his friend died.
He fought for three days at Gettysburg.
Charley was wounded in the battle of Gettysburg, but he survived.
What are some ways that Minnesotans back home were able to help with the war effort and support the soldiers?
Minnesota support…
Soldiers’ aid societies gathered supplies and sent letters and packages.
Money and companionship were offered to families of war casualties.
When the men went off to war, the wives, sons, and daughters did more work at home keeping the farms running.
What was the final outcome of the Dred Scott case?
The Supreme Court decided that the Scotts were “property” and not citizens.
What can you tell me about Robert Hickman?
Robert Hickman
Came to Minnesota on a steamboat.
When he arrived, some riverboat workers tried to stop the boat from landing.
He established the Pilgrim Baptist Church in St. Paul.
He was a preacher and leader of a group of former slaves.
He was a former slave who could read and write.
