Henry Sibley
  • He was the delegate sent to Washington to try to make Minnesota a legal territory.
  • Once Minnesota became a territory, they once again chose Sibley to be the ELECTED delegate to Congress.
  • Sibley was also responsible for getting the Indians to sign the treaties of Traverse des Sioux and Mendota.

14
What are some reasons why Harriet Bishop felt Minnesota was a place that needed to be civilized?
15
Well, when she came here she found…
  • Her school was a grimy, dirty blacksmith’s shop and needed to be cleaned up.
  • She started a Sunday school and a temperance group.
  • She organized many women’s groups to raise money for the community.
  • She encouraged people to move to MN, but to bring their “principles firm and unyielding”.
16
Hans Mattson
  • How did Hans Mattson change Minnesota?  Don’t tell me about his rough winter yet, just tell me how he changed Minnesota.
17
Hans Mattson encouraged other Swedes to move to Minnesota.
18
Ok smarty-pants…now it’s time for you to tell me about some of the challenges that Hans faced his first year here in Minnesota.
19
He dealt with the following…
  • He and two others were caught in cold, windy weather.  They could have died, but survived by sticking together.
  • The weather that winter was bad.  His families supplies nearly ran out and the stores in Red Wing were empty.  He and others survived until the steamboats could bring more supplies to the stores that spring.
20
Minnesota
  • Becoming a
  •     territory
21
What were some of the advantages of becoming a territory?
22
The advantages were…
  • Minnesotans could send an elected delegate to US Congress.
  • There would be a governor.
  •  There would be a legislature.
  • There would be a court system.

   Minnesota’s Native
           Americans
24
When the white settlers came pouring into Minnesota, how did that affect the Ojibwe and Dakota?
25
"The government set up reservations..."
  • The government set up reservations to separate the Indians an settlers.
  • The Indians were encouraged to give up their traditional customs and become farmers.
  • Many moved to reservations because they were the only homes they had left.
26
Here it comes, the ESSAY QUESTION!!!
27
You have a choice of answering one of the following:
  • Why did people leave Europe?  Why did they immigrate to Minnesota?
  • In what ways were Harriet Bishop and Hans Mattson similar and different?
28
For the first question…
  • Some people wanted adventure.  Land and jobs were scarce in countries such as Norway.  Irish left because of famines.  Germans left because of wars.
  • Many immigrants came to MN because others encouraged them to come.  Family and friends sent letters describing the great life here.  Often discussions of the climate, land and opportunities were exagerated.
29
And for the second question…
  • Similarities:  They both came to MN to seek new opportunities.  They both brought hope, determination, and courage.  They both liked the challenge of life in a territory.  They both relied on community and groups for support.
  • Differences:  Hans Mattson was a Swedish immigrant; Harriet Bishop was a New England immigrant.  Mattson came to MN to farm.  Bishop came to MN to teach.

Good luck on the test!!  I’m sure that if you use this power point and your Get-It-Guide to study, you’ll do a fine job.  J
